This is a 4-day sea kayak course.

THIS IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY COURSE
Family-friendly courses are open to anyone, including youths. The minimum age for youths attending a family-friendly course is 12 years old. All youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who participates in the course. Youths 16- 18 years may attend any OENZ training course when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Youths (12-17years) – $599.50

4 DAY SEA KAYAK COURSE OVERVIEW
This four-day sea kayaking course includes the two-day introductory course and two days extending those skills. The focus is on excellent boat control and advanced paddle strokes as well as providing a consolidation day. You will gain the skills and confidence to explore rocky shorelines, and sea caves as well as paddling in moving water.
This is a popular course for those who have limited sea kayaking experience and would like to get some professional guidance, or no experience and would just like to give it a go.
COURSE LOCATION
The course is based out of Lyttelton Harbour.
Day 1: We meet at Charteris Bay, Lyttleton Harbour at 9:00 am
Day 2: Lyttelton harbour based, location determined by weather and group
Day 3: Lyttelton harbour based, location determined by weather and group – possible camp out on Quail Island.
Day 4: Lyttelton harbour based, location determined by weather and group
If the weather is windy we may use Lake Rua as a backup option
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is included in the course, we have 3 nights available to spend in cabin accommodation, but if the weather is good we will spend the 3rd/last night camping at Quail Island.
GEAR & EQUIPMENT
All you will need for this course is your personal paddling clothing. We will supply all the sea kayaks and the necessary equipment for you if you don’t have your own. You can find a packing list and course outline at the bottom of this page.
FOOD
Food is not provided on this course. We recommend packing plenty of snacks and lunch that does not require cooking.
FREE TRANSPORT

If you’re staying in a hotel
Free transport is available from any Christchurch accommodation if your travelling from out of town to attend one of our courses.

TRAVELLING FROM OUT OF TOWN?

We recommend that you arrive in Christchurch the day before your course. We have a few hotel & hostel suggestions on our FAQ’s page. Please avoid booking accommodation north or east of the city centre. At the end of the course, we are more than happy to drop you back at your accommodation or directly to the airport. The earliest time we can have you back at the airport is 6 pm.

Day two: Rescues
- Paddle float rescues
- Scramble self-rescue
- Supporting a rescue
- Emergency communications and equipment
Kayak control in a double sea kayak
Day three: Advanced Paddle Strokes and Boat Control
- Paddle techniques/skills: Stern rudder, draw strokes, low brace turns
- Paddling in current: Ferry gliding, entering and exiting eddies
- Control/Maneuvering: Railing, edging, paddling around rocks
Rescue
- Self-rescue in moving water
Day four: Consolidation Paddle
The group will choose (with their instructor) a location to paddle to fitting to weather, sea state and group ability.
