Custom River Crossing & Steep Ground Course January 11, 2024
This is a one-day river crossing & Steep Ground Course.
Completing a one-day river crossing course with OENZ is a great way to upskill and ensure your safety before you head on your next big adventure. Rivers are one of the greatest hazards in New Zealand’s backcountry and claim lives every year! They are dynamic and pose a serious risk to the untrained.
“There are on average, about four river crossing deaths each year. Of these accidents, most occur in flooded rivers or side streams.” (Bushcraft Manual Fourth edition. Mountain Safety Council, 2006)
Add to it some steep ground training and you will have a solid foundation of skills for more adventurous backcountry hikes that include passes and high saddles.
River Crossing and Steep Ground course location
Starting at Porters Pass we will venture up the hill to get into some steep terrain, looking specifically for scree and slippery tussock grasses. We will spend our time looking at footwork and walking techniques before continuing onto Mt White Bridge for the river crossing course. This will be a longer-than-normal day as we will be departing from Christchurch in the morning and have been allowed extra time to cover the additional skills.
For people interested in a river crossing course closer to Christchurch, please contact us for a private booking.
