5 Day Alpine Training Course August 14, 2019
This is a 5-day mountaineering course based in Arthurs Pass National Park.
Our 5-day alpine course will give you all the skills you need to climb all the classic winter mountain routes in New Zealand and overseas. Delivered by our highly skilled local guides you will learn all the essential skills required to get out there and climb independently. From our base lodge, we have access to some of the best peaks and climbing terrain in Arthurs Pass National Park including Mt Temple, Mt Phipps, and Mt Cassidy. This is a must do course for all aspiring climbers.
Where is this course delivered?
This course is based from Temple Basin lodge in Arthurs Pass National Park (see map). However, New Zealand mountain weather can be fickle so as a backup option sometimes we split the course between Temple basin and Broken River Ski area (see map). Having flexibility in course location ensures you will get the most of your time with us. The course location is confirmed a week before the scheduled course dates.
What’s the accommodation like?
We will be staying in the temple basin alpine lodge situated high above Arthurs pass village. The lodge is very comfortable with power, flush toilets, a drying room, heaters, bunk rooms, and a large common room and bar.
Please note that one night is spent out in a snow cave or a very basic alpine hut.
This is a catered course, the team up at Temple Basin lodge will look after our
catering for the duration of the course. You can expect a cooked breakfast, dinner and dessert, all prepared for by the onsite chef. A small shop and bar are also available to purchase refreshments and snacks.
Traveling from out of town?
Lots of people travel to attend our courses and we like to make it easy. Transport could be tricky to organize if your flying or coming from out of town. Talk to one of our friendly team about our pick-up/drop off service.

You don’t need your own climbing or mountaineering gear for this course. We have all the specialist gear & equipment available for you to borrow or hire. If you have your own gear we encourage you to bring it along as it’s better to train with the gear that you will be using in the mountains. After you have completed your booking we will send you a full gear list.

How many people will be on my course?
We believe that small groups are better for this type of training so we have a maximum client to instructor ratio of just 4 clients to one Instructor. e.g 1-4 clients you will have 1 guide, 6 clients you will 1 guide and 1 assistant guide, 8 clients you will have 2 guides and operate in two small groups.
Does this course have minimum numbers?
Yes, the minimum number for the course to proceed at the advertised price is 2 clients. Knowbody likes to cancel courses, and we don’t have to if a course is low on numbers we won’t cancel your course, instead, we will offer you the following options.
a.)A shorter course with a smaller group – e.g with two people you will cover the course content much faster, so 4 days with 2 people is great value for money.
b.) You will be offered to continue with the course and planned and split the extra cost with the other participants.
Note: In the unlikely event that this course shortened due to insufficient numbers we will provide accommodation for you in Arthurs Pass Village for the full duration of your original booking.
