1 Day Alpine Skills Course August 8, 2020
One day introductory alpine course.
A one-day introductory alpine training course that focuses on personal movement skills and safety in the mountains. This course is suitable for people who wish to embark on winter tramping where an ice axe and crampons may be required. Prior experience is not necessary.
This course is delivered in the Craigieburn Range. The course starts in Darfield (30 mins from Christchurch) at 7:30 am. We access the snow at Broken River or Mt Cheeseman ski fields near Castle Hill Village.
The course finishes at 3:30 pm at the Ski field car park (approx 1.5-2hrs from Christchurch airport).
GEAR & EQUIPMENT
All you will need for this course is waterproof boots and normal outdoor clothing. We will supply all the mountaineering gear for you if you don’t have your own. You can find a packing list and course outline at the bottom of this page.
Food is not provided on this course. We recommend packing plenty of snacks and lunch that does not require cooking.
***Return transport is not available for this course***
If you do not have transport we recommend attending the 2-day Alpine course or 4-day Alpine & Avalanche course that includes return transport from Christchurch.
We can offer transport from Christchurch or any of the meeting spots below to get to the course but we cannot provide transport back to Christchurch at the end of the day.
Got your own transport
We are happy to drop you back at Castle Hill Village at the end of the day. This way you won’t need to drive your vehicle up the ski field road.
Staying in a hotel
Free transport is available from any Christchurch accommodation if your travelling from out of town, however, we cannot provide return transport at the end of the one day course.

TRAVELLING FROM OUT OF TOWN?
We recommend that you arrive in Christchurch the day before your course. We have a few hotel & hostel suggestions on our FAQ’s page. Please avoid booking accommodation north or east of the city centre.
