Te Araroa Trail Training

Embarking on the Te Araroa Trail is a serious undertaking with many challenges and rewards. The trail passes through some of the most breathtaking scenery in New Zealand and is one of the greatest long distance walks in the world. However, New Zealand’s trail walking can be difficult, the weather is extremely changeable and trails can be very remote. It is essential that you know what you’re doing out there and you know what to do if things go wrong.

Where is the training?

Our courses are delivered in the South Island, it’s where the trail gets tough and people get into trouble so its the best place to do your training.  We offer free transport from Christchurch city hotels/hostels and will even drop you back into town or back at the airport at the end of your training.

We recommend doing your training in advance before embarking on the trail. But I’m coming from overseas you say? Not a problem, just fly directly into Christchurch International airport or take a 1.5 hr domestic flight from Auckland.

Recommended Te Araroa Trail Training

We recommend completing the 2 Day Navigation & survival bush craft course & the River Crossing Course before embarking your TA adventure:

2 Day Navigation and Bushcraft course
2 Day Navigation and Bushcraft course

This course focuses on multi-day tramps/hikes in New Zealand. On this course we look at trip planning, NZ weather, packing and gear requirements for extended trips, and navigation using topographic maps.

This is a popular course for people that are experienced day walkers, hunters or people that are part of tramping groups/clubs that would like to up-skill or extend their personal knowledge or move onto doing multi-day or off track trips.

“Just spent 2 days with Alan on the last survival bushcraft and navigation course for the ”summer”. I was really impressed with how he was able to tailor the course perfectly to our level and at the same time differentiate his teaching to suit the goals of the different participants. I’m a teacher and I know quality instruction when I see it. These guys are quality. Cheers Al.” – Will Elliot

River crossing course
River Crossing course

Completing a one-day river crossing course with OENZ is a great way to up skill and ensure your safety before you head on your next big adventure. Rivers are one of the greatest hazards in the New Zealand outdoors and claim lives every year! They are dynamic and pose a serious risk to the untrained.

“There are on average, about four river crossing deaths each year. Of these accidents, 80{58853ec79041cc783b7c3a678c314174b398210327e4128d1d58972e205e987b} occur in flooded rivers or side streams.” (Bush craft Manual Fourth edition. Mountain Safety Council, 2006)

“My Wife and I have done two courses and it has been really helpful. We’ve done the two-day navigation course and the River Crossing Course. Both courses have been customized To our needs so we couldn’t have asked for better service. We will be well prepared for our adventures to come. Highly recommend them. And thank you in advance for saving our lives crossing dangerous rivers”
