4 Day Sea Kayak Course
This is a 4-day sea kayak course.

4 DAY SEA KAYAK COURSE OVERVIEW
This four-day sea kayaking course includes the two-day introductory course and two days extending those skills. The focus is on excellent boat control and advanced paddle strokes as well as introducing rolling techniques. You will gain the skills and confidence to explore rocky shorelines, and sea caves as well as paddling in a current.
This is a popular course for those who have limited sea kayaking experience and would like to get some professional guidance. This course is appropriate for people that have little or no experience and would just like to give it a go.
COURSE LOCATION
This course can be delivered from Lyttelton Harbour, Sumner beach &/or Monks Bay, with the rolling component of the course pool based. We have the flexibility in the course to change locations to get the best conditions available on the day.
Day 1: Will meet at Charteris Bay Lyttleton Harbour at 9:00 am
Day 2: Lyttelton harbour based
Day 3: Christchurch beach areas TBC on weather and tides
Day 4: Pool based for rolling (half-day), classroom-based for the afternoon.
ACCOMMODATION
There is no overnight accommodation for this course but local camping is nearby and we can offer transport to and from your accommodation before and after the course.
GEAR & EQUIPMENT
All you will need for this course is your personal paddling clothing. We will supply all the sea kayak and the necessary equipment for you if you don’t have your own. You can find a packing list and course outline at the bottom of this page.
FOOD
Food is not provided on this course. We recommend packing plenty of snacks and lunch that does not require cooking.
FREE TRANSPORT

If you’re staying in a hotel
Free transport is available from any Christchurch accommodation if your travelling from out of town to attend one of our courses.

TRAVELLING FROM OUT OF TOWN?
We recommend that you arrive in Christchurch the day before your course. We have a few hotel & hostel suggestions on our FAQ’s page. Please avoid booking accommodation north or east of the city centre. At the end of the course, we are more than happy to drop you back at your accommodation or directly to the airport. The earliest time we can have you back at the airport is 6 pm.

Day three: Advanced Paddle Strokes and Boat Control
Kayaking Skills
- Paddle techniques/skills: Stern rudder, draw strokes, low brace turns
- Paddling in current: Ferry Gliding, entering and exiting eddies
- Control/Maneuvering: Railing, edging, paddling around rocks
Rescue
- Self-rescue in moving water
Consolidation paddle in PM
Day four: Introduction to rolling and Marine VHF theory training (optional Assessment)
- Pool session introducing rolling in a sea kayak (half day)
- VHF marine radio theory
- Introducing marine forecasts
