15-week Instructor Training Programme Overview

Our 15-week instructor training programme is specifically designed for those who are wanting to lead people in the outdoors. If you are looking for a change of career or some practical training before undertaking a new job in outdoor leadership. This 15-week course will give you the personal skills you need to safely lead groups in an outdoor setting.

This “train the trainer” style course is designed to look at key aspects that are important when leading others in a dynamic environment. There are no pre-requisites required for our level 1 course.

N.B: IDP is dedicated to the aspiring Level 1 instructor, if you are an aspiring NZOIA Level 2 (or equivalent) instructor please get in contact for the advanced variation of this course. 



There are no academic entry requirements for this course.

Other requirements:

If English is not your first language you must provide:

  • Overall Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band score lower than 5.0 (achieved in one test completed in the last two years), OR
  • Acceptable alternative evidence of the required IELTS

Physical Fitness:

  • Should be comfortable carrying up to 10kg in a pack for day trips/overnight tramping
  • Should be comfortable walking for up to 6 hours on tracks and off-tracked terrain

Level 1 Instructor Career Pathway 

On completion of the 15-week course, participants may be employed to work as outdoor instructors/guides or assistant instructors/guides under direct/indirect supervision in a range of operations such as outdoor centers’, guiding and instructing operations or school/club trips.

Recommended additional training for leading and teaching others in alpine terrain

Back Country Avalanche Rescue or Avalanche Risk Management L5

Recommended additional training for leading and teaching others in outdoor environments

NZOIA Assessment at Leader or Level 1

There are opportunities for students to include additional assessments to acquire the New Zealand Outdoor Instructor Association (NZOIA) certification for working in the outdoors in New Zealand. 

At the end of the 15-week course, your tutors will be able to provide you with feedback on whether you would be ready to sit these qualifications and/or how to go about getting assessment ready. To ensure a robust assessment process these qualifications are delivered and assessed by NZOIA (external to OENZ). This means there is no conflict of interest in the assessment process. Assuring potential employers that your skills are to our industry standard.


Instructor Training Programme Location

This course will be based in Christchurch and travel will take place between the Craigieburn Forest Park, Banks Peninsula, Arthurs Pass National Park, Hakatere Conservation Park and Mt Thomas, Mt Oxford and Ashley Forest. (Canterbury Foothills)


Instructor Training Programme Accommodation

**Your accommodation is partially included in this course**

The course is held over 15 weeks from September to December.

During this time your accommodation will vary.

Accommodation Living Springs

When we are running the practical blocks your accommodation will be away from Christchurch and will be a mixture of “base huts” with power and shower/kitchen facilities, backcountry huts (no power or showers) shared cabins and tents.


When we are locally based in Christchurch your accommodation is not included.


Gear & Equipment

All you will need for this course is waterproof boots and normal outdoor clothing. We will supply all the specialized equipment for you if you don’t have your own.  We will send out a detailed gear list on pre-enrollment for the course.


Food is not provided on this course.



Free Transport

Outdoor education New Zealand mountain training courses
OENZ 4×4

Free transport is available from your Christchurch accommodation. Your tutor transport you to and from course locations.

Students may find it useful to have a personal vehicle although you will be central for bus services in Christchurch.
