3-Day Custom climbing, River Crossing & Steep Ground Course - Joyce C Group January 9, 2024
This is a 2-day intro to rock climbing course delivered in Christchurch, New Zealand and a 1-Day River Crossing & Steep Ground Course delivered in Canterbury High Country and on the Waimakariri River at Mt White Bridge

3-day course overview
This is a custom course for Joyce’s group in Australia, however, this course is open to everyone to join should you be interested.
The course will cover 2 days of rock climbing as well as a 1-day river crossing and steep ground training customised for the original group.
These 3 days would be valuable for anyone looking to acquire some rope & climbing skills as well as a river crossing and steep terrain to take on more challenging backcountry routes or as a base for transitioning from tramping to mountaineering.
Rock climbing course location
Our introductory climbing courses are delivered on the Port Hills in Christchurch. We meet at 8:30 am at Mt Pleasant Yacht Club/Scott Park (see Google Maps) on the first day. From Scott Park, it’s only 15 mins to the climbing area. The group and your instructor will decide the climbing locations for each day, depending on the weather and the group’s abilities. We often use Albert Terrace, Cattlestop, Pop Up Crag and Rapaki Rock climbing areas for this course.
River Crossing and Steep Ground course location
Starting at Porters Pass we will venture up the hill to get into some steep terrain, looking specifically for scree and slippery tussock grasses. We will spend roughly an hour looking at footwork and walking techniques before continuing onto Mt White Bridge for the river crossing course. This will be a longer than normal day as we will be departing from Christchurch in the morning and have allowed extra time to cover the additional skills.
